This recipe for Easy Pita Bread Pizza has come about due to my love of pizza coupled with a desire to make it as low calorie as possible! I realize that this is not the first pizza recipe on F.E.A.R. so that should tell you just how much of a pizza fan I am! This recipe for Easy Pita Bread Pizza doesn’t have a homemade crust as the other recipe does but rather, I use pita bread to achieve a nice crunchy crust. I am sure that we would all agree that the gold standard of pizza making would be an authentic pizza crust that has been kneaded to death and left to rise for days in order to achieve the most perfect crust possible. However, I also think we would all agree that most of us don’t have the time (or patience) to do this every time we want to eat pizza! So, if you find yourself short on time but really wanting a pizza for dinner, you’ve come to the right place! Easy Pita Bread Pizza will give you the pizza fix you need! I have provided a link to my recipe for homemade pizza sauce so you can make yourself a batch. http://www.FunEasyAmazingRecipes.com/homemade-pizza-sauce . Just click on the link and you can are ready to go! The recipe for homemade pizza sauce makes a fair bit of it so what I like to do is divide it up into smaller portions and freeze it. This way, I always have some on hand for when I’m busy and don’t have time to make any. It is so much better tasting than any pizza sauce you could buy at the grocery store.
All right, enough about homemade pizza sauce. Let’s get back to creating a terrific Easy Pita Bread Pizza! I really love having pizza this way because it has a great crunch and it’s relatively low on calories which is not an easy feat when you’re talking about pizza! I guess what I should say is that you have the option of going easy on the calories because it’s your creation and because the pita bread itself is only around 140 calories. You can make Pita Pizzas either individually or for a group. I keep the pita bread on hand in the freezer so I can enjoy it anytime. I will also freeze the mozzarella in small amounts otherwise the enormous block of mozzarella that I buy from Costco will go bad before I can use it all. It freezes well and this way, you won’t have to run the risk of throwing it out before you can get to it.
I get teased all the time about the numerous fridges and freezers I have in my house. One of the reasons I have so many is because I HATE throwing stuff out and another is because all of the members of my family likes different types of bread and beer…..(but beer is not the point of my story at the moment!). So, basically, I have a freezer full of bread, buns and pita bread to accommodate our bread obsession as well as all of the different tastes everyone has. Gerald likes only white bread and Jessica likes whole grain, you get the picture. This will quickly fill up the freezer, let me tell you! Anyways, here is what I hope will be a helpful tip to you….bread will go stale if you keep it in the fridge. This is due to some sort of chemical reaction that occurs…I am not sure of all the details but that is what happens. So, to avoid this, I put all the bread I buy right into the freezer so that when I take some out, it’s totally fresh. I am mentioning this because you can buy the big pack of pita bread, take one out for your pizza and the rest can go in the freezer where it will keep nicely until the next time you want to make Easy Pita Bread Pizza!
- 1 Pita Bread
- 2-3 Tbsp Pizza Sauce I've included the recipe link below
- 1/2 Cup Mozzarella, shredded
- 1 Slice Processed cheese optional ingredient but worth a try!
- 1 Tsp Italian Seasoning
- 1 Tbsp Parmesean Cheese
- 1 Slice Proscuitto, sliced
- 1-2 Mushrooms, sliced
- 1-2 Tbsp Fresh Basil Put the basil on after the pizza has cooked.
Spread the pizza sauce on the pita bread evenly. Top with the cheese slice that I will divide into about 6 pieces so that it covers the pita bread evenly. Next up are the mushrooms followed by the mozzarella. I top it off with the prosciutto which allows it to get crispy while it's cooking. Sprinkle on some Italian seasoning and parmesan and bake at 425 for 7-10 minutes. Once the pizza is ready, I will add the final touch of the basil chiffonades.
