Ahhh!! Old Fashioned Banana Bread just like my mom made…..It is just like my mom made since this is her original recipe! I knew when I began this website that one of the very first recipes that needed to go on here was my mom’s amazing recipe for Old Fashioned Banana Bread. It is one of the very first recipes I’ve ever made. I was lucky enough to grow up to the amazing smell of this Old Fashioned Banana Bread baking when I came home from school. It was certainly a baking staple in my home. This recipe is very easy to whip up however it will take some time to bake so keep that in mind if you are trying to coordinate having banana bread for your kids when they get home from school. This recipe for old fashioned banana bread will take approximately an hour to bake. It is my observation that all ovens are not created equal and do vary quite substantially on actual baking times. I am hesitant to give an exact time as to when this bread will be done because of this discrepancy in oven baking times. So, what I would suggest as an alternative and will be more reliable is to say that once you reach about 50 minutes in to the baking time, you should test the readiness of the bread using a cake tester if you have one or a toothpick will also suffice if you don’t have one. Once the cake tester/toothpick comes out clean, then it is officially ready to be removed from the oven. There is one other critical instruction to making this Old Fashioned Banana Bread that will ensure yours will turn out the same rich dark brown colour that mine is. You must use bananas that are very ripe…you know the kind I mean…the ones no one wants to eat because they are all brown and mushy. Those are the BEST bananas to use for this recipe. As a colleague of mine discovered after I failed to mention this very important point, the banana bread will be a light brown colour and very dense if you use bananas that are not ripe. It was not a good outcome to say the least! So, give it a whirl…this really is very simple to make but just be sure to take my advice and you will be enjoying the most amazing tasting banana bread in no time! Your kids will love you for it!
- 1/2 Cup Butter I like unsalted best
- 1 Cup Sugar
- 2 Cups All Purpose Flour
- 2 Large Eggs
- 4 Medium Bananas Well ripened and mashed with a fork
- 1 Tsp Baking Soda
- 1 Tsp Vanilla
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream butter using a hand mixer and add sugar to butter and continue mixing. Add the eggs and mix well. Add mashed bananas. Finish off by adding the flour and baking soda and mix well. Transfer to a loaf pan and bake for at least an hour. Check if it's done by inserting a toothpick into banana bread. The bread is ready when the toothpick comes out clean.
